Millitec partner with UKSSD to work towards a sustainable Food System

UKSSD, Sustainable, SDGs
Have you heard of the SDGs? The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are “the world’s best plan to build a better world for people and our planet by 2030.”

The 17 goals, ranging from “No Poverty” and “Zero Hunger” to “Responsible Consumption and Production”, target building economic growth alongside addressing social needs including health, education and equality.

The flagship "Measuring Up" report , created by the UK Stakeholders for Sustainable Development (UKSSD), showed us the complex challenges faced within the UK's Food System and highlighted some key areas in which the UK drastically needs to develop if we are to achieve the targets set out by the UN.

I firmly believe that businesses, no matter what their size, all have the ability to impact in some way. That’s why at Millitec, we’ve partnered with UKSSD on the Food Systems programme, to help make a step change in the way food is produced in the UK.

Here are just some of the ways we are already working towards the 2030 goals:

SDG 4: Quality Education – we are working with local schools, charities and clubs to engage young people in STEM, give hands-on learning opportunities and establish excitement around gaining skills and knowledge.

SDG 5: Gender Equality – we encourage applications for roles across all areas of the business from all genders. We use female STEM ambassadors to help tackle a gender imbalance within technology and manufacturing.

SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure – across the past 12 months, we have dedicated 25% of our annual turnover into Research and Development, continually driving innovation within food production systems. We will continue to develop an innovative range of robotics to support our customer’s sustainability needs.

SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production - we’re working to reduce or eliminate the use of inefficient pneumatics across our depositor range. We will be providing all of our customers with an Environmental Impact Tool, to easily calculate the CO2 savings possible through switching to electric motor machines.

SDG 17: Partnership for the Goals - we will be working with our customers, and the UKSSD, to develop products to overcome barriers to sustainability.

Later this week, we will be meeting with the other UKSSD partners; Nestle, WWF, Nando’s and others, to help kick start a Road Map to a better Food System. Millitec may not be the biggest name in the partnership – but our impact can be just as great as anyone else, after all, it’s our machines in the factories.

We’re proud to be supporting the SDGs, and to be part of what will change the future of food production.
